Abandoned plane near Chaiten, Patagonia, Chile

The Carretera Austral (in English, Southern Highway), known in the past as Carretera Presidente Pinochet is the name given to Chile's Route 7. The highway runs about 1,240 kilometers (770 miles) from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins through rural sections of southern Chile.

Construction was begun on the highway in 1976 under the presidency of Augusto Pinochet in order to connect a number of the remote communities in the Los Lagos and Aisén regions of Chile. The highway opened to traffic in 1988, and by 1996 was completed to Puerto Yungay. The last 100 kilometers (62 miles) to Villa O'Higgins were opened in 2000.

The abandoned plane seems to have been remodeled into accommodation. No more information on why it was abandoned there

  1. Aircraft FACh 960 made a forced landing on a site near the present location of the "house" in 1976, with the fuselage being moved later by a local who assembled part of his house with it. It seems the plane may have been suffered more damage after the eruption of Chaitén Volcano this year.

  2. The plane looks like it was abandoned years before the volcano. From the way the yard is dug up, I suspect the highway was built too close for the home to be livable.
